Pacific celebrates centennial

The City of Pacific officially commemorated its 100th year this past weekend.

The centennial celebration included festivities at Pacific Park, with live music, a karaoke competition, Sunday morning worship services and games, and culminated with the rededication of the former Volunteer Park as Centennial Park last Monday.

“In the 1990s, the park was named Volunteer park to honor the volunteer firefighters,” Pacific Councilmember Leanne Guier said.

The centerpiece of the park is Yates Cabin, which was dismantled and moved from its former location on Milwaukee Boulevard and Fifth Street by students of the Bates Technical College carpentry program under the guidance of instructor Chris Buselmeier.

The festivities included Pacific poet Gerald McGreen, who shared a poem written for the occasion, and a chance to view items that were placed into a time capsule to be buried in front of the cabin.

Also on hand for the celebration was State Rep. Skip Priest.

“I just want to congratulate you,” Priest told the assembled crowd at the Pacific City Hall before presenting the city with a Washington state flag flown over the Capital in Olympia. “One-hundred years is an achievement.”
