New direction needed in right-turn madness

Right turns only. The entire area we live in – east of Harvey Road and north of 8th Street – is basically "locked in" unless we want to attempt the death-defying left turn from Pike Street Northeast onto 8th Street.

Fortunately it isn’t something I ever need to do during the week, but unfortunately I am frequently behind someone who does. Sometimes waiting for 5-10 minutes before they can make their left-hand turn. There is no open turn lane to enter, and 8th Street is bumper-to-bumper.

I would love to see a “no left turn” sign to prevent the attempts after 4 p.m. Really, traffic starts to get bad earlier than that. What should be a five-minute – or less – trip to Fred Meyer instead means I have to go all the way down to the light at Harvey and Auburn Way to turn left just to be safe and avoid having to wait for those who insist on going left onto 8th Street Northeast when it is next to impossible.
