For the Reporter

Heavier Than Air Family Theatre Company presents “Annie,” the Tony Award-winning musical that’s loved around the globe.

Little Orphan Annie was one of the most widely read comic strips in the ’30s and ’40s, and a book of these popular stories was the 1971 Christmas inspiration for the musical comedy conceived by lyricist-director Martin Charnin. It’s no wonder the iconic show has become a holiday classic.

“Annie” opens at 7 p.m. Friday, Dec. 15 on the main campus of Green River College, 12401 SE 320th St., Auburn, and runs through Friday, Dec. 22.

Ranking among the top 25 longest-running Broadway shows, the musical’s popularity is evident, as two of the seven Heavier Than Air performances have already sold out.

Set in 1933 at the height of the Great Depression, a spunky little girl escapes an orphanage to find the parents who abandoned her, but instead stumbles on a string of adventures in New York City. Ultimately, Annie finds an unlikely new home and family with a billionaire, his personal secretary, and a lovable mutt named Sandy, bringing this rags to riches story to a heartwarming conclusion. Ironically, the actress playing the lead role has an adopted sibling and says the play’s message is spot on – it doesn’t have to be biological to be family. Touché, Annie Warbucks.
