Auburn Community Players presents ‘Hairspray’ at the Ave

The Auburn Community Players – a talented local cast – present the beloved musical “Hairspray” for nine performances in June at the Auburn Avenue Theater.

Show times are 7 p.m. June 2, 3, 9, 10, 16, 17, with 2 o’clock matinees on June 4, 11 and 18 at the historic theater, 10 Auburn Ave.

The 1950s are out, and change is in the air. “Hairspray”, winner of eight Tony Awards, is a family-friendly musical, piled bouffant high with laughter, romance and deliriously tuneful songs. It’s 1962 in Baltimore, and the lovable plus-size teen, Tracy Turnblad, has only one desire to dance on the popular “Corny Collins Show.” When her dream comes true, Tracy is transformed from social outcast to sudden star. She must use her newfound power to dethrone the reigning Teen Queen, win the affections of heartthrob, Link Larkin, and integrate a TV network … all without denting her ‘do.

The Auburn Community Players produce two musicals a year, rehearsing and building sets and costumes in their spare time. To audition or volunteer, visit the ACP Facebook page or contact the Auburn Parks, Arts and Recreation Department at 253-931-3043.

Tickets are $15 regular, $13 for student and senior ($20/$18 at the door).
