Carpenters tribute celebrates the holiday season

Lisa Rock and her 6-piece band perform Dec. 13 at the Ave

After taking her show around the country, singer Lisa Rock and her 6-piece band are bringing holiday classics – Carpenters style – with A Carpenters Christmas at the Auburn Avenue Theater on Tuesday, Dec. 13.

Showtime is 7 p.m. at the historic theater, 10 Auburn Ave.

Considered one of the best vocalists of all time, Karen Carpenter captured the attention of a generation with her unabashedly catchy pop music. The Carpenters’ beautiful, memorable love songs topped the Billboard charts with more than a dozen number one hits.

Now, Rock, a singer and playwright, has arranged a band, complete with backup singers, and together they are dedicated to creating a Carpenters experience. Rock’s four octave range allows her to sing all the Carpenters hits in their original key, keeping the songs genuine and more recognizable for the audience.

“When she hits the lower range of her marvelous voice,” said Chicago critic Alan Bresloff, “if you close your eyes, you can see Karen Carpenter’s face.”

And Rock and her band are now expanding their Carpenters offerings with a special Christmas show. The holiday concert is a nod to the two Christmas albums the Carpenters made and captures the feel of the classic TV holiday variety shows of the 1970s.

Tickets are $20, $18 for seniors and students, and can be purchased at AuburnWA.gov or by calling Auburn Parks, Arts and Recreation at 253-931-3043.
