Drivers should expect overnight closures on State Route 18 in Federal Way this week.

Crews will close one direction of the highway near I-5 Monday through Thursday nights while large concrete bridge girders are lifted into place.

• Monday, July 25 – the morning of Wednesday, July 27: Crews will close eastbound SR 18 near I-5 Monday and Tuesday nights from 11 p.m. to 4 a.m. A nine-mile detour will direct traffic onto southbound I-5 to 54th Avenue E., then onto northbound I-5.

• Wednesday, July 27 – the morning of Friday, July 29: Crews will close westbound SR 18 near I-5 Wednesday and Thursday nights from 11 p.m. to 4 a.m. A four-mile detour will direct traffic onto northbound I-5 to S. 320th Street, then onto southbound I-5.

This work is part of a $112 million project to improve safety and ease congestion at the I-5/SR 18/SR 161 interchange. Crews are building two new flyover ramps to eliminate lane weaving that can lead to collisions.

Starting Monday, Aug. 8, the ramp from westbound SR 18 to northbound I-5 will be closed for the remainder of the month. Crews will be rebuilding the ramp to make room for a new flyover ramp. Traffic will be detoured onto northbound SR 99. Drivers coming from Auburn can use northbound SR 167 and SR 516 to access northbound I-5. Detour maps are available at: www.wsdot.wa.gov/Projects.
