Alert neighbor notices smoke in window, calls 911

Just after noon today, a resident checking his mail noticed smoke in a window of a three-unit apartment building on the 300 block of 1st Avenue North in Algona. He quickly called 911 and evacuated the other units.

Firefighters from the Valley Regional Fire Authority arrived on scene and witnessed heavy smoke coming from the unit. They quickly extinguished the fire and after conducting two searches determined that the unit was unoccupied.

There were no injuries to firefighters or civilians. The cause of the fire is under investigation.
