Terminal Park Elementary School’s English Language Learner (ELL) club will host its annual open house from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Terminal Park Elementary School gymnasium.

The event is designed to celebrate the diversity in Auburn School District and to provide vital information and education to community members who do not speak English at home. Families can enjoy games, refreshments, bingo, demonstrations and more.

Participants include the City of Auburn Diversity program and Parks, Arts and Recreation program, Washington Dental Association, Valley Regional Fire Authority, Green River Community College, YMCA, Auburn Police Department, ACAP, Washington Oral Health Department and Dr. Robert Pavalunas.

Terminal Park’s ELL club has 74 students who speak 14 different languages.

The school district’s board of directors recently recognized Cecilia Soltero, an eighth-grader at Mt. Baker Middle School, for being an outstanding student. Cecilia, a 3.9 student, is exceptional at math and science and plays the violin. ... The board also recognized Beth Raines, third grade teacher at Dick Scobee Elementary, for her outstanding service. Raines is approaching her 20th year of teaching at Dick Scobee. “The reason I’ve been here for so long is because of the staff and administrators,” Raines said. “Everyone has a great sense of humor, and we value and respect each other so much. I guess we’re not just co-workers but friends, too.” ... Matthew Regan of Auburn was recognized at the Jamestown College (Jamestown, N.D.) Honors Convocation held April 24. ... Kasandra Garmong, former Auburn resident and a first-year fine arts student at Cornish College of the Arts, was awarded a Chris Holland Scholarship and Art Department Merit Award for her work exhibited in Roll Call, an annual merit scholarship show held at the college. Roll Call gives students a chance to earn scholarships based on the quality of their artwork, including concept, execution, and presentation. Garmong was awarded a scholarship for her work in sculpture and photography.
