For the Reporter

The Auburn Riverside Culinary Arts team won first place in the annual Western Region Black Box Culinary Arts competition at Renton Technical College last Saturday.

The winning team included seniors Diana Grishchenko, Breanna Henley and Tristen Tracy.

The competition was a "mystery basket." Students did not know what ingredients they would have to prepare their dishes and they did not bring their own recipes. With the ingredients provided, the students prepared an appetizer of sesame crusted seared Ahi tuna atop a spring greens salad with a grapefruit and passion fruit vinaigrette. Their entrée was roasted pork loin and barbecue prawns with roasted red pepper risotto and a peppercorn demi-glace. The dessert was a tuile cookie and chocolate turnover with a rhubarb Chantilly cream and five-berry puree sauce.

Judges from Renton Technical College's culinary arts department awarded the team first place out of five teams.
