Council passes resolution opposing Initiative 985

The Auburn City Council this week approved Resolution No. 4405, opposing Initiative 985, a measure that will appear on the state ballot for Nov. 4 general election.
The resolution calls into question the language of the initiative, as it is currently written, as not being clear and that the interpretations of the effects of the law, if it were passed, are inconsistently stated.
In addition, passage of I-985 would put cities like Auburn in the position to not be able to afford funding automated traffic calming programs, such as red light photo enforcement, and have significant impacts on local governments to be able to maintain local control of its traffic concerns.
“We implemented our photo enforcement in Auburn to make our most dangerous intersections and school zones safer, and it is working,” said Deputy Mayor Sue Singer. “If I-985 passed and we are forced to send those revenues to the state, it would sadden us to have to discontinue this effective program that makes our city a safer place to drive.”
