A family of five escaped a fire in their mobile home in the 700 block of 37th Street Southeast Monday morning thanks to smoke alarms that alerted them to the danger.

Firefighters from the Valley Regional Valley Fire Authority responded to the fire at 10:50 a.m. and could see smoke coming from windows in the home. Firefighters quickly put out the fire and treated and released one person at the scene for smoke inhalation.

Investigators are still trying to determine the cause of the fire.

The VRFA reminds citizens to change smoke alarm batteries once a year and to test alarms monthly to make sure they are working properly.
