Authorities identified a Pacific man who was found dead in the vicinity where a train hit a vehicle in the Sumner area over the weekend.

The Pierce County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the man as 55-year-old Gary Stark.

An autopsy was planned Monday to determine how he died.

According to Sumner police, a vehicle was driving south on the railroad tracks when it was struck by a northbound train just after 1:15 a.m. Sunday. The incident occurred around the Thompson Street bridge.

Stark’s body was discovered about one-tenth of a mile away from the vehicle.

The track reopened just before 3 a.m. Sunday.
