The Washington State Senate today endorsed a 2014 supplemental budget proposal with the support of Sen. Joe Fain (R-Auburn) who worked with his colleagues to pass the plan.

The legislation is a mid-course update to the state’s two-year budget adopted in 2013 and includes no new taxes and strategic education funding increases.

“This year required a willingness to continue operating within existing state resources and target investments in areas that make the biggest difference for students and job creators,” said Fain, who serves as the Senate Majority Floor Leader. “The opportunity to address the budget without a deficit for the first time since 2008 only came because of fiscal responsibility and dedication to improving education in 2013.”

The plan provides an additional $38 million for classroom technology and additional scholarship support for higher education.

“Over the years I’ve had the opportunity to visit many South King County classrooms, including the Kent School District’s Technology Academy,” Fain said. “I’ve seen firsthand and heard from students, teachers and parents that investing in 21st-century classroom technology is one of the best ways to prepare students for the increasing demands of the job market. This investment is a great example of the meaningful choices lawmakers must make when spending taxpayer dollars.”

The plan, which was originally released on Monday, received broad bipartisan support with a 41-8 vote and is now sent to the House of Representatives for consideration. Lawmakers are in the 46th day of the 60-day 2014 legislative session.
