Student art embraced in college’s Portfolio Review

The Graphic Design and Illustration students in the Auburn School District showed their work at Green River College’s ninth annual Portfolio Review on May 25.

The college and its graphic design professor, Sarah Dillon Gilmartin, hosted 80 students from Auburn, Auburn Riverside and Auburn Mountainview high schools. Students got to see demonstrations, visit a student art gallery, listen to artist talks and receive peer feedback on their artwork.

AP and graphic design students had the opportunity to interview with local arts professionals and representatives from 12 college and technical schools as well as a variety of industry professionals in the art and design field.

The Portfolio Review is a culminating event, capping a year or more of creating artwork in high school. Students experienced talking about their work, compiling a portfolio, expressing goals and communicating the skills they possess.

High school teachers continue to organize the event, with alumni returning as interviewers, including Tom Erdman, an Auburn graduate and owner and designer for Saftey Shirtz, and Libby Tipton, an Auburn Mountainview graduate.
