Traffic advisory: Construction, paving project on Auburn Way South begins April 23

Other work in progress; one road closure

Construction begins Monday, April 23, on a paving project that will replace the roadway surface on Auburn Way South from State Route 18 to 17th Street Southeast.

The project will also upgrade curb ramps and traffic signals to improve accessibility. The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) – with participation by the City of Auburn – is implementing the project.

Construction is anticipated to be complete by Sept. 1, however, the duration is dependent on weather conditions.

The first phases of work will construct sidewalk and signal improvements and will be completed during daytime hours, typically between the hours of 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. Paving and other work that requires more extensive traffic impacts will occur during nighttime hours. Additional traffic notices will be made as the construction progresses.

Elsewhere

• On Tuesday, April 24, pavement work for the North Auburn Logistics Project will require alternating traffic on West Valley Highway at South 287th Street. The work is dependent on weather.

Access to residences and businesses within the project area will be maintained during construction, but delays should be expected.

• On Tuesday, April 24, through Friday morning, April 27, the City’s contractor, Miles Resources, will be paving Auburn Way South for the Auburn Way South Corridor Safety Improvements project. Construction will require lane closures and disruptions on both directions of Auburn Way South, from Muckleshoot Plaza to Dogwood Street SE from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. The work is dependent on weather and may be re-scheduled without further notice.

Additionally, Riverwalk Drive SE will be closed to all traffic between Howard Road and Auburn Way South from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. on Wednesday, April 25, and Thursday, April 26.

Local residents and businesses should anticipate construction noise during the evening and early morning hours while the work is taking place.

Heavy congestion is anticipated during the lane restriction hours noted above; please plan accordingly. Access to residences and businesses within the project area will be maintained during construction, but delays should be expected.

• On Wednesday, April 25, from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., construction related to the MultiCare Emergency Department project will require the closure of 1st Street NE from N Division Street to Auburn Avenue. This work is dependent on weather.

Signed detour routes will be posted. Access to residences and businesses within the project area will be maintained during construction but delays should be expected.
