Auburn Mountainview's Weir punches ticket to Mat Classic XXV

Auburn Mountainview's Dakota Weir finished fourth in the 285-pound division at the West Central District III regional wrestling meet at Bonney Lake High School on Saturday, earning a berth into Mat Classic XXV.

Weir went 2-2 at the regional meet, rebounding from a first-round pin against Shelton's Ben Wilson and fighting his way through the consolation bracket to wrestle for third place.

Weir, a junior, defeated his second-round opponent, Lincoln's Eric Pula, with a pin at 1 minute, 18 seconds, then pinned Lakes sophomore Kiyrie Simons at 4:19.

In the third-place match, Weir fell to Foss junior Patiole Pesefea, 4-2.

The top four wrestlers in each weight class earned berths at this weekend's Mat Classic, with the fifth earning an alternate spot. State bouts are Friday and Saturday in the Tacoma Dome.

Auburn Mountainview 145-pound senior Nick Helms earned an alternate spot with a fifth-place finish at the regional. Helms went 2-2 and defeated North Thurston sophomore Michael Lafrenier with a pin at 3:30 in the fifth-place match.

Enumclaw defeated South Puget Sound League 3A rival Decatur, 233-212, for the team title. Auburn Mountainview finished with 23 team points.
