Carrabelle Harbor leads all the way | Emerald Downs
Carrabelle Harbor exerted her class Saturday at Emerald Downs, taking the early lead and holding off betting favorite Royal Moses for a 3½-length victory in the $18,900 feature race for older fillies and mares.
Ridden by Isaias Enriquez, Carrabelle Harbor ran 6 ½ furlongs in 1:15.74 and paid $6, $2.80 and $2.20. Doris Harwood is the trainer for owners Bar C Racing Stables and Desert Rose Racing.
For Enriquez, it was his second win Saturday and his sixth in two days. For Harwood, it also was her second win Saturday and third in two days.
Royal Moses, ridden by Javier Matias, rallied from last to finish second and paid $2.60 and $2.20.
Maggie's Special, ridden by Eliska Kubinova, was another three-quarters of a length back in third and paid $2.60 to show. Inquiry Miss and SolarWind completed the order of finish.
Carrabelle Harbor put her speed to good use, clearing the field early while setting fractions of :22.41, :45.13 and 1:09.32. She straightened for home with a two-length lead, and drew off through the lane to win convincingly.
A triple stakes winner at Emerald Downs, Carrabelle Harbor has a 5-4-3 record in 18 career starts and earnings of $145,739. Saturday's victory ended a nine-race drought that dated back to 2011, but several of thelosses came vs. the track's top older fillies and mares.
Enriquez continues to slowly gain on Juan Gutierrez in the jockeys' standings. Gutierrez rode one winner Saturday and owns a 38-31 lead over Enriquez. ... Owner Heidi Nelson and trainer Blaine Wright unleashed another promising 3-year-old as Scrapmetal King ($13) dominated race two in 1:09.11 for six furlongs. A $47,000 yearling, Scrapmetal King is a New York-bred by First Samurai-Holy Love. ... Trainer Robbie Baze continued his 2013 renaissance with victories by She'sontopyodeling ($10) in race four and Just Gonna Be ($63.60) in race six. Baze is nine-for-48 this season compared to 12-for-167 during the entire 2012 meet. ... Enriquez and trainer Neil Knapp continued their streak of interesting finishes in Saturday's ninth race finale. Following two straight days in which they were disqualified from wins via DQ, they combined with Fighting City Hall to finish second, as Memphis Mobster prevailed by a nose in 1:16.29 for 6½ furlongs. This time both Enriquez and Knapp claimed foul against Memphis Mobster and jockey David G. Lopez, alleging interference in the stretch. The stewards disallowed the claim, however, and Memphis Mobster ($5.40) was declared the official winner. .. Owners Michael Pollowitz and Jeff Wilson scored their second win in two days as Untilifindyou ($3.80) prevailed in race five. ...
