Chu and Your remains undefeated with win in Shinpoch | Emerald Downs
The exceptionally quick Chu and You used her speed to bag another stakes victory Sunday at Emerald Downs.
With Juan Gutierrez riding at 119 lbs, Chu and You raced to a 2 1/2-length victory over Strawberry Dawn in the $50,000 Barbara Shinpoch Stakes for 2-year-old fillies.
Chu and You ran 6 1/2 furlongs in 1 minute, 17 seconds and paid $3.60, $2.40 and $2.10. Robbie Baze is the trainer for owners/breeders Mike and Amy Feuerborn of Maple Valley, Wash.
In command throughout, Chu and You set fractions of :21.90, :44.54 and 1:10 en route to her third victory in as many starts, and with stakes triumphs in the Angie C and Barbara Shinpoch to her credit, the Washington-bred is the solid front-runner for season honors.
A Washington-bred by You and I-Bronze Charmer, Chu and You earned $27,225 to increase her bankroll to $59,249. She has yet to trail a horse and has won her races by 5 3/4, 4 3/4 and 2 1/2 lengths.
“She’s really nice,” Gutierrez said in the Winner’s Circle. “I worked her in the mornings and she was training really well.
“She proved the last three starts that she’s good enough. The field today was the toughest that she’s faced, but she showed them how nice she is. She’s all professional.”
Speaking of nice fillies, Strawberry Dawn, ridden by Debbie Hoonan rallied to finish second and paid $3.60 and $2.60. A Sue and Tim Spooner homebred by Tribal Rule-Ruby Dawn, Strawberry Dawn has a first and two seconds in three starts, including back-to-back seconds in the Angie C and Barbara Shinpoch.
Charismata, ridden by Isaias Enriquez, finished third and paid $2.60. Reigning, See My Tail Lites and Simba’s Sis completed the order of finish.
Decatur Princess, coming off a third in the Angie C, stumbled at the start and unseated jockey Rocco Bowen, but both the jockey and horse were uninjured.
“She stumbled in the second jump and grabbed a quarter,” Bowen said. “Usually if they stumble, it's the first jump, but she got bounced a little bit and then stumbled.”
Gutierrez rode three winners on the 10-race card – his second triple of the week – and leads Isaias Enriquez 83-82 in the jockeys’ standings.
