Auburn, Auburn Mountainview and Auburn Riverside to play in new SPSL 3A league next season

Beginning next school year Auburn and Auburn Riveside drop to 3A classification and join Auburn Mountainview in a revamped South Puget Sound League 3A athletic conference.

According to the Washington State Interscholastic Activities Association's latest numbers, released Jan. 8, both Auburn and Auburn Riverside's enrollment numbers are below the 1,252.4 student cutoff for 4A the state's largest classification. Auburn Riverside has 1,200.2 students and Auburn has 1,073.8. Auburn Mountainview, already a 3A school, has 1,158.1.

The new SPSL 3A is to feature five schools already in the conference – Auburn Mountainview, Bonney Lake, Enumclaw, Lakes and Peninsula – with Auburn and Auburn Riverside dropping down, and Sumner High School popping up from 2A.

Decatur, formerly a SPSL 3A school, is to play next season in the new 10-school SPSL North 4A, which will include Kentwood, Kentlake, Kentridge, Kent-Meridian, Federal Way, Decatur, Beamer, Jefferson, Tahoma and Mount Rainier.

The WIAA Executive Board is expected to approve the final classifications at its Jan. 27 meeting.
