July 28, 2008 · Updated 4:03 PM
Vincent Vu shot a two-day total of 87 for 18 holes, winning the boys 8-11 age group in the Washington Junior Golf Association district tournament last week at The Classic Golf Club in Spanaway.
Vu was one of seven Auburn-area players who will be competing in the WJGA state tournament which begins today on three courses in Spokane: the Spokane Country Club, Manito, and Wandermere.
The 10-year-old Vu shot a 4-over-par 40 on the first day at district, giving him a five-shot lead against Spencer Clapp. (The 8-11 age group plays just nine holes per round.) Vu had a 47 in the second round, but Clapp also carded a 47, leaving him in second place with a 92.
A total of five Auburn boys qualified in the 16-17 age group, but only four of them will be going to state. Broc Johnson, who finished second by one shot Covington’s Kent Hagen, will be heading south to Vancouver this week instead of east to Spokane. Johnson is part of the four-player Junior America’s Cup team that will compete at Royal Oaks Golf & Country Club in Vancouver. Johnson struggled on the first day at district with a 6-over 72, but came back strong in the second round with a 1-under 71 for a two-day total of 149. Hagen won with a 74-74–148.
Erik Jarvey took fifth place at district, carding a 76-79–155. Right behind him tied for sixth were Sean Carroll (82-74–156) and Keenan Darrow (78-78–156). The 17-year-old Darrow head to state with two sub-district wins (Allenmore and Foster) to his credit. Charles Lee is the other 16-17 qualifier from Auburn, tying for 13th at district with an 82-80–162.
Kelly Campbell tied for second in the 14-15 age group to earn his ticket to state. Campbell fired a 78-77–155, leaving him knotted with Enumclaw’s Tyler Salsbury (80-75). Both of them finished one shot behind Kent’s Tom Zavada (77-77–154).
Jayme Carbon was the only Auburn girl to make the state field. Carbon took fourth in the 16-17 age division, shooting 88-87–175.
