California shipper City by the Bay remained undefeated Sunday with a brisk three-quarter-length victory over a stubborn Chu and You in the $50,000 Seattle Handicap for 3-year-old fillies at Emerald Downs.

Ridden by Juan Hernandez at 119 pounds, City by the Bay ran 6 1/2 furlongs in 1 minue, 14.76 seconds and paid $3.60, $2.60 and $2.10. The winner, who was making her first start since an 8¾-length victory in the $100,000 Barretts Debutante last September, is trained by Billy Morey for Martin Bach of Danville, Calif. and Jack Owens of Modesto, Calif.

Now 3-for-3 lifetime, City by the Bay earned $27,500 to push her bankroll to $97,670. Based at Golden Gate Fields, the Kentucky-bred daughter of City Zip has notched wins at Santa Rosa, Fairplex Park and Emerald Downs.

Chu and You rebounded from a sub-par effort last month in Canada and gave the winner a stern challenge through the stretch. Last year's champion 2-year-old filly at Emerald Downs, Chu and You led through fractions of :22 for the quarter-mile and :44.34 for the half, and responded gamely through the lane to just miss.

Ridden by Juan Gutierrez at 120 pounds, Chu and You paid $7 and $5.

Mylast Sweet Pea, a 50-to-1 long shot ridden by Gallyn Mitchell at 115 pounds, rallied to finish third and paid $9.20.

Lotta Attitude, the 3-to-1 second choice, finished fourth, and was followed by Strawberry Dawn, Sunpenny, Just a Love and Belladiva.

City by the Bay, in fourth place early, moved up three-wide to take command into the stretch, and gradually edged away from Chu and You.

"I thought she could win this race, but I didn't think it would be easy," said Hernandez, second leading rider at Golden Gate. "I asked her a little before the quarter-pole because I didn't want (Chu and You) to try and get away from us.

"This was my filly's first time here, so I had to make sure to really get after her so she knew when to go. She responded really well. I was worried that we might finish second because the filly on the inside looked like she was never going to give up, but my horse didn't quit."
