Auburn falls shy in pursuit of state Little League championship

The Auburn Majors All-Stars came oh so close in their bid for the state title Saturday.

Needing to beat Walla Walla Valley twice, Auburn dropped a heart-breaking 13-12 decision in the second, winner-take-all game at the Federal Way National League Complex.

Auburn took the first game earlier in the day, 4-3, to force a second and deciding game.

Walla Walla Valley, with its second consecutive state championship, moves on to the regional tournament in San Bernandino, Calif., where they will take on Wyoming on Aug. 6.

Auburn nearly came all the way back in the final inning. Walla Walla Valley took a 13-8 lead into the bottom of the sixth inning and then held off an Auburn rally.

For Auburn in Game 1, Amari Goodfellow tossed five strong innings, striking out 10 and allowing just three hits. Austin Ellsworth hit a two-run home run and drove in the winning run, Brendan Stein, in the sixth.

In the Game 2 loss, Stein smacked a three-run homer and Ellsworth launched a two-run home run. Jay Mentink homered and tripled, and J.J. Goodfellow also tripled. Emmett Weichbrodt doubled.
