Green River falls short of reaching NWAC’s Final Four

Sommerfield leads way to Elite Eight; Gators finish solid season

Alex Sommerfield scored 24 points and Cam Cawley had 19, but it wasn’t enough as Green River College fell to Lane Community College of Eugene, Ore., 90-80 in the Northwest Athletic Conference men’s Elite 8 Basketball Tournament at Everett on Friday.

The Gators finished the season 20-11.

Lane’s victory moves the Titans (27-3) into next Saturday’s Final Four against North Idaho College (Coeur d’Alene).

Sommerfield, a 6-foot-7 sophomore who prepped at Thomas Jefferson, scored his first 11 points in less than three minutes to start the game. By the half, he had 20 of Green River’s 34 first-half points.

Lane had a balanced scoring attack with five players scoring in double figures, led by Tarik Cool’s 21 points.

Kevin Baker, a Kentlake product, finished with 13 points for Green River.

On March 7, the Gators advanced from the NWAC’s Sweet 16 with an 89-66 rout of Peninsula College (Port Angeles).

Sommerfield led the way with 24 points and nine rebounds. Baker had 22 points and Mitch Wetmore, an Auburn Riverside grad, finished with 20.
