Call him Slater the Gator.

The Associated Student Government of Green River College (ASGRC) on Thursday passed a resolution to officially name the school’s newly arrived mascot.

ASGRC president Daniel Juan Felix Tampubolon presided over the reading of the proclamation by vice president Jessica Cuevas.

Marking the end to a process that began in April, Green River College athletics director Bob Kickner oversaw the process that involved the college community. Students, staff and faculty were encouraged to nominate suggestions for the new mascot designed by The Mascot Company. More than 90 suggestions were brought forth before a list of eight finalists were considered. Other names such as Grady, Chomper, Gazi and Grick were evaluated.

“A college mascot is one of the most public and visual marketing tools available to a campus,” Kickner said. “The students have wanted a way to express their college spirit for years, and through their financial support I feel we have hit a home run with the birth of Slater the Gator.”

Slater has already attended several on-campus meetings, division retreats and was well received at opening day ceremonies.

Slater will become a member of the GRC Cheer team and will be visible at Green River sporting events, as well as making public appearances at local community events.
