Auburn Mountainview got a gem from senior pitcher Brandon Williams to slip past Hazen 3-0 in the South Puget Sound League 3A/Seamount League tournament Friday at Russell Road Fields in Kent.
The win earns the Lions the No. 5 seed into the West Central District 3 tourney. The team will play Olympic at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Kent Memorial Park in a loser-out contest.
Williams, who has signed to play ball for Washington State University next season, tossed a seven-inning, complete-game shutout, giving up just two hits and striking out 12 batters while walking three.
“It was a well-played game. We made a couple of mistakes, but thankfully our guy was a hero on the mound,” coach Glen Walker said. “He threw strikes. He battled and got ahead of guys and finished them off. He wasn’t going to let guys go deep in the count and stick around.”
The Lions (10-6 league, 12-8 overall) scored a run in the first inning and put the game away in the sixth inning with Michael Patenaude hitting a two-run home run over the left-field fence.
“It was his first of the year,” Walker said. “It was a good time to get it.”
Patenaude finished the game with 2-of-3 hitting to go with his home run and two RBIs.
As a team, the Lions struggled at the plate, getting just four hits.
“Offensively, I wish we could have put the ball into play better,” Walker said.
