More is not better

State School Superintendent Randy Dorn wants to expand the free breakfast program by launching a publicity campaign, “The Fuel Up First with Breakfast Challenge”. It is this type of backward thinking that is driving our nation to the edge of bankruptcy.
“Nearly half of the state’s students qualify for free breakfast at public schools, yet few actually access it, campaign officials said.” This would indicate to a reasoning person that they don’t need or want it. Instead, Superintendent Dorn wants to create demand with a publicity campaign spurred with cash prizes and recognition.
“As Dorn explains, the more meals a school district serves, the more federal and state tax dollars will come in to support school nutrition programs.”
What? Does Dorn actually think additional tax dollars are freely available? They will just “come in”?
Superintendent Dorn should focus on using our limited tax dollars to maximize student scholarship, not well-meaning, but wasteful programs that divert us from that goal. Some of us will keep this in mind the next time we hear that we need to spend more money on education.
