Wandering Great Dane comes to a sad end

The homeless, wandering Great Dane that a friend of Patricia Cosgrove had offered to adopt and for which the White River Valley Museum director had put up a small reward, was hit by a car and killed Thursday night on the 1800 block of Howard Road.

Good Samaritans tried to help the injured dog, but she ran off into the brush just south of a public storage building. A call to Auburn Police brought an officer to the scene to find her in the dark but without success.

Kelley Durham, director of the Auburn Valley Humane Society, wrote on AVHS Facebook page that Animal Control Officer George Winner found the dog Friday morning, dead of her injuries.

“She was brought to AVHS and handled with great dignity,” Durham wrote. “She will be cremated soon, and we plan to have her ashes returned to us.”

In the next few weeks, Durham added, the museum will set up a memorial fund.

“In addition, we will have a memorial gathering to commemorate her crossing over the rainbow bridge,” Durham wrote. “Details will soon be available here and at AVHS.”

King County Animal Control had previously set a trap but the wiley dog didn’t fall for it.

“It’s sad and disappointing,” Cosgrove said Monday.
