Revitalize people and their needs

Our City of Auburn is concerned about “revitalization,” especially of the downtown area. Although this seems commendable, citizens should ask what revitalization really means. It also should be asked if private economic and outside interests are pushing other agendas. I do not believe the proposed tax breaks should favor one segment of our population over another.
Real revitalization starts with the people of Auburn, their needs and goals. Senior citizens and young families are struggling to make ends meet. They should not have to pay to provide favors to developers.
So what positive actions can individuals take to help revitalize Auburn? Of course, we need to keep watch on our political process so that our elected officials fairly represent our interests. Discussion in our newspapers is an important involvement. But there are many other individual contributions we can make. Perhaps help a senior citizen neighbor with limited physical capabilities to clean up their lawn. Contribute to the Auburn Food Bank. Help charities that provide services like drug rehabilitation and fighting crime. There are many volunteer opportunities to help improve and beautify Auburn. Revitalization is really about people, their needs, and us.
