Vernon H. Tipton passed away on February 3, 2014 to be embraced in the loving arms of his Savior.
Chub, as he was known to family and friends, was born September 30, 1933 in Atkinson, Nebraska to John and Hattie Tipton.
He grew up in the Tekamah area of eastern Nebraska. After graduating from Tekamah High School in 1951 he joined the Air Force and after his service he soon met the love of his life, Wilma Kamp. They were married on October 29, 1955. Their first child, Michael, was born when the couple lived in Lincoln, Nebraska. The young family moved to Dillon, Montana in 1958. Their daughter, Jo Ellyn, was born in 1963. In 1966 the family moved to Auburn, Washington, when Chub was hired to teach at Totem Junior High in Federal Way. He would go on to spend the remainder of his 30 year career in education with the Federal Way School District. He served as Vice-Principal at Kilo Junior High and later Principal at both Totem and Lakota Junior Highs. He retired in 1993 as the Director of Vocational Education for the District.
In retirement Chub and Wilma enjoyed traveling while also making every effort to attend their grandchildren’s activities. They also enjoyed together: boating, playing bridge, holding Seahawk season tickets and following Nebraska Cornhusker football.
Chub was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church in Auburn for over 47 years. Chub’s life was led by a strong faith and an ever-present and gentle love for his family.
He was preceded in death by his parents John and Hattie, and two brothers Calvin and Merlin Tipton. He is survived by his loving wife of over 58 years – Wilma Tipton, Michael (Patti) Tipton, Jo (Rod ) Menck, 6 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.
A celebration of his life will be held at 11 a.m. on February 15, 2014 at Messiah Lutheran Church in Auburn. Interment will be at Tahoma National Cemetery.
