Virgil Daniel Alipio Ungherini

On May 9, 2014 Virgil passed away at Garden Terrace in Federal Way at the age of 92. He was born on Feb. 6, 1922 in Auburn Washington where he lived his entire life.

Virgil attended Auburn High and upon graduation followed his father’s footsteps and started work on the railroad. He joined the Army in 1942. He played the clarinet in the Army band and was a cadet in the Army Air Forces Advanced Flying School. When that program ended he served as Staff Sergeant as a radio operator interceptor at Vint Hill Farms, VA.

In 1946 he attended Seattle University and subsequently returned to work on the BN RR. He retired after 40 years as an engineer for BNSF RR.

He is preceded in death by his parents Fabio and Emilia Ungherini of Auburn and his sister Anita Crosby of Santa Rosa CA. He is survived by his loving companion of 46 years, Eileen Dodd and sisters Clelia Stevens of Auburn, Norma Mongelli of Ridgefield NJ., and five nieces and one nephew.

Virgil’s pleasures in life were family, friends, cooking Italian style, gardening, opera and his beloved dog “Tiki”. Virgil was a kind, compassionate gentleman with a wonderful sense of humor. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.

Graveside service will be held at Mt. View Cemetery at 2020 Mountain View Dr. in Auburn on June 3, 2014 at 12:00PM. A Celebration of his life will follow at Copper Falls Golf Course in Auburn.
