Auburn Mountainview

Coach: Jerry Bowles, eight years

Wrestlers: Three returners. Evelyn Aquilar, 125-130-pound, junior; Jennifer Hardin, 155-160, junior; Tia Le, 110, senior; Jasmin Aquilar, 155-170, senior.

Outlook: The Lions return three lady grapplers with on-mat experience this year. Bowles said he expects Evelyn Aquilar, who competed at regionals last season, and Jasmin Aquilar, a fourth-year wrestler returning from a broken arm sustained last season, to make it to this year’s regional tourney. Hardin is a first-year wrestler who looks to garner experience quickly, and Le is back for her second-year on the mat.

Key dates: The Lions host the Auburn Mountainview boys and girls tournament on Jan. 17 at the high school. The girls follow that up with the Jan. 21 Girls Duals at Bonney Lake High School. Girls duals typically are a multi-team event, to combat low numbers and provide as many matches as possible for the wrestlers. Typically, six or seven teams compete.

Auburn Riverside

Coach: Shawn Martinson, second-year (5 years as co-boys head coach)

Wrestlers: Two returners. Jessica Packer, 140-145, senior; Melissa Chamberlain, 155, junior; and Alea Helmbrecht, 132, sophomore.

Outlook: On the mat Packer, who was a state-alternate last year, will look to set the tone for Chamberlain and newcomer Helmbrecht. “We have been hit with the injury bug this season, but are looking to build for the end of the year tournaments,” Martinson said. “Our strongest wrestler, Jessica, started wrestling last season and finished very well.” The Ravens will have to fight off some tough competition in the SPSL 3A to snag one of just three berths into the sub-regional tourney.

Key dates: Feb. 6-7, 3A girls sub-regional tournament, site to be determined. Feb. 14, girls regional tournament, site to be determined. Feb. 20-21, Mat Classic State Championships, at the Tacoma Dome.

Auburn

Coach: Erick Opel, five years.

Wrestlers: Four returners. Jazmine Sanchellanes, 135, senior; Makayla Barnett, 235, junior; Cinthia Carmona, 155, junior; Patricia Deleon, 130, sophomore; Anevay Avillia, 125, sophomore; R.J. Sincio, 100, sophomore; Daniela Sanchellanes, 115, freshman; and Alma Morales, 110, freshman.

Outlook: With four returners and eight wrestlers total, the Trojans are stocked. Jazmine Sanchellanes returns and has already notched a tourney win, first-place at the Muckleshoot Tribal School girls wrestling tournament. Also back is Barnett, who participated at Mat Classic last season. “Auburn girls continue to build girls wrestling in Auburn,” Opel said. “The team has really come together. They have been working hard, and I expect us to be the most conditioned and disciplined wrestlers every time we step on the mat. I see a lot of growth in the returners and the younger wrestlers. I would expect Jazmine, Makayla and Patricia to make a run at state. I also see huge improvements in Anevay, and I think she may also push through to the Dome. Overall, it’s an extremely positive season so far with a busy schedule.”

Key dates: Lady Lipstick Tournament, Jan. 24 at Lakes High School. On Jan. 31, the Trojans wrap up the regular season with the Kentwood Tournament.
