Street maintenance workers will be busy in the next two years.

On Monday Auburn Street Systems Engineer Jai Carter ran the Auburn City Council through what the department expects to get done in 2016 and 2017 under the auspices of the Save our Streets Local Street Preservation program and the 2016 Arterial Street Preservation program.

Save our Streets has a $2.23 million program budget for 2016, $1.6 million in 2017 and $500,000 in both of those years for each of the water funds.

While the 2016 program budget for the Arterial Streets Preservation Fund is $3.6 million, the 2017 program budget was as of Monday undetermined.

Carter described several areas without sewers in the selected SOS projects, and City workers will survey these to gauge local interest in a sewer Local Improvement District (LID). The results will determine if this work should be added to the scope of the project.

The Local Street selection process began with 47 streets that were being considered for reconstruction based on pavement condition rating, maintenance needs, and consultation with water and sewer utility engineers to determine their budget-based priorities.

Proposed SOS rebuilding projects for 2016:

• F Street Southeast, from East Main Street to 4th Street Southeast: rebuild street, drainage and water, .24 miles, total cost $704,000.

• 21st Street Northeast, Auburn Way North to I Street Northeast: rebuild street and drainage, .1 miles, $271,000.

• 25th Street Southeast (M Street Southeast to R Street Southeast): rebuild street, drainage, water and perform an LID survey for sewer, .25 mile, $872,000.

Proposed SOS projects for 2017:

• 19th Street Southeast and G Street Southeast (F Street Southeast to H Street, 17th Street Southeast to 19th Street Southeast): rebuild street and drainage, .19 miles, $227,000.

• 53rd Avenue South, South 302nd Place and cul-de-sacs; thin overlay and curb ramp upgrade, .49 miles, $167,000.

• 26th Street Southeast, 27th Street Southeast, 28th Street Southeast, S Street Southeast, T Street Southeast, U Street Southeast: rebuild street, drainage, water, and LID survey for sewer, .46 miles, $1.6 million.

“This is the worst area of the entire city,” Carter said of the above. “This is kind of a priority neighborhood we’ve been looking at over the past several years. We rebuilt 22nd Street Southeast, 23rd Street Southeast and 24th Street Southeast … and we’re just pretty working our way down the list.”

“And if revenues continue to come in as forecast, we hope to be able to add additional thin overlay streets to the SOS program as well,” added Traffic Engineer Pablo Para.
