October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month.

Mayor Nancy Backus proclaims October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month at Monday’s City Council meeting, with a purple tree lighting ceremony, silent vigil and presentation of officers awards.

The program begins at 6 p.m. at the City Hall Plaza, 25 W. Main St., just prior to the 7 o’clock council meeting in the chambers.

The ceremony will include remarks from Backus and Police Chief Bob Lee and conclude with a candlelit moment of silence to remember and honor victims and survivors of domestic violence.

Participants are encouraged to wear purple, the color of Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
