Big corporation’s evasive ways

Published 2:02 pm Monday, November 23, 2015

As a former homeless person who still relies on food stamps to get by, I am outraged that Fortune 500 companies in Washington are taking advantage of tax havens to stash money overseas and avoid paying their fair share.

Reports say more than $2 trillion are being stowed in bank accounts outside of the United States, and $60 billion of that money is taxable. Taxes on that amount are vital to the American people and could be used to fund services such as food stamps and other important programs to help Americans in hard times.

I want to encourage other Auburn residents to email, speak to and call their elected officials about emptying these tax havens, and restoring this money to our communities. These Fortune 500 companies must pay their fair share in taxes.

As a blue collar worker I’ve struggled with the economy. As a human I’ve struggled with addiction. I have fought hard to get my life back on track, and these services have helped a lot. I am holding up my duty as a taxpayer. That should be the case for everyone, including big corporations.
