Breast Diagnostic Center has opened the polls for Our Community, Your Choice – its people’s choice contest – with four area nonprofit organizations vying for first- and second-place cash prizes.
Staff at the independent mammography clinic, with offices in Auburn and Federal Way, choose organizations that directly impact the communities Breast Diagnostic serves. This year’s nominees positively impact the lives of kids, adults and families in their respective neighborhoods, making a difference on a hyper local level.
The first-place winner will receive $1,500 and second-place will be awarded $500.
Breast Diagnostic staff members nominated four local nonprofits for the contest. Nominees include the 2014 winners, Angel Wings Foundation, and the Auburn Food Bank, as well as newcomers FUSION – Friends United to Shelter the Indigent, Oppressed and Needy and Communities in Schools of Federal Way.
Angel Wings Foundation is unique in its mission to serve families who experience life-changing events, working from the foundation and belief that one small difference can lead to greater things. AWF recognizes how events, such as illness, can impact families who are not in dire straits but may be unprepared for the unexpected. The Legacy Project and Random Acts of Kindness programs have helped the organization to expand an already successful track record of directly assisting families whose lives have been altered.

The Auburn Food Bank began its mission in 1930, when neighbors came together to support one family after a house fire. Eighty-five years later, the food bank has grown exponentially, providing not only groceries but also hot suppers twice per week to individuals and families residing within the Auburn School District boundaries. In addition, clients also have access to personal hygiene products and other forms of assistance.

FUSION has been housing homeless families for over 20 years, beginning with one housing unit in 1993 and growing to 17 today. FUSION offers a package of housing and social services to clients. Through a partnership with Catholic Community Services, families receive comprehensive support services. Each family is housed in a fully furnished home and partnered with a social worker to build a skill set, overcome barriers and create a new, successful life.

Communities in Schools of Federal Way is focused on dropout prevention, in line with the national CIS organization’s mission. Students from the Federal Way School District are surrounded by a community of support both inside and outside of the classroom, through a network of CIS affiliates, site coordinators and collaborative partners. In 2014, CIS Federal Way helped 8,350 students, making a major impact on the community.
