Valley Regional Fire Authority firefighters rescued a family dog before flames destroyed most of a tri-level home in Algona on Tuesday.

A neighbor called at 11:15 a.m. to report smoke and fire coming from the rear of the home in the 400 block of 4th Avenue South. Fortunately, none of the six residents were inside at the time of the fire.

Algona Police Officer Anthony D’Angelo arrived first on the scene, kicked in the door of the approximately 2,000-square-foot home and searched for any residents. He found no one before heat and smoke forced him out of the home.

VRFA units arrived shortly after to find the home heavily involved in fire. Firefighters made a quick stop on the fire and during their search, found the family dog huddled in a utility closet between the hot water heater and a clothes dryer. The dog was visibly frightened, according to firefighters, but did not resist them.

Four adults, one teenager and one infant reside in the home. The home is uninhabitable at this time because of heavy fire damage to the rear of the home and smoke and water damage throughout.

The family’s insurance company will provide temporary housing for them. Fire investigators were on scene to determine the cause of the fire.
