A night that began with celebration — as Auburn High School’s baseball team honored its seniors — quickly took a turn for the worse. Auburn lost its sixth straight game and was swept aside by Mount Rainier in game two of the series, 21-5, on April 16.

Mount Rainier threw up three runs in the first inning on a Jackson Williams three run home run that set the tone early. But the Trojans battled right back to tie the game in the bottom of the first and put up three runs on back-to-back doubles from Chase Rankin and CJ Baxter.

The Rams went on to score four runs in the top of the second, and Auburn was only able to manage two in the bottom of the second on a pair of bases loaded walks from Baxter and Robbie Coma.

The score was just 7-5 heading to the top of the third inning, but the Auburn bullpen struggled and allowed seven runs in the third inning. Isaac Gerstner began the inning, he recorded just one out, and Alex Novinski followed. Novinski was able to finish the inning after seven Rams came across to score and put the game out of reach.

Mount Rainier proceeded to score four runs in the fourth, and three in the fifth. Aiding those runs were five errors in the field from Auburn in the five innings, and 12 of the 21 runs given up by Auburn pitchers were earned.

Auburn hadn’t given up 20 or more runs at all this season. It happened once in 2025 in a 21-0 loss to Kennedy (March 25).
