A rivalry continued inside of Cheney Stadium on April 23. The game doesn’t carry any weight in terms of the standings, but to players on both teams, the Auburn and Auburn Mountainview rivalry is still strong on the baseball diamond.
Auburn Mountainview (10-4) shut out the Trojans (4-12) 10-0 in five innings on Thursday night at the home of the Tacoma Rainiers. The Lions have now won three in a row following the two game sweep of Kent-Meridian.
“To be able to come out here and play our rivals out here on a field like this and to do that to them, it felt great. It’s something that I’ll remember for a long time,” Auburn Mountainview senior Imani Brown said.
The Lions’ starting pitcher Jayce Yost dominated and held Auburn to just one hit. The lefthander needed just 53 pitches to get through all five innings on the mound at Cheney Stadium. Yost struck out five Trojans, walked one and gave up a single to Chase Rankin in the bottom of the first inning.
“He was incredible. To give him the opportunity to be here and pitch in a place like this is special. Against a rival school, he showed out,” said head coach Austin Simpson.
Following the first inning, Yost retired 12 out of the next 13 Auburn hitters to throw a complete game.
At the plate, Auburn Mountainview’s offense got settled in early. Brennen Grames singled home the first run of the game against Auburn starter Robbie Coma on a single to right center.
With a 1-0 lead heading to the top of the second, Auburn Mountainview turned it on in the third and fourth innings. A walk, balk and double from senior Imani Brown led to a four run second inning. Brown finished his night with a game-high four RBI.
“It felt great because coming up we got some tough series against Decatur and Kentlake. To warm up the bats like that and be able to feel confident going into the next few series is what we needed. I’m glad we were able to do that,” Brown said.
Yost also checked in with a pair of hits and reached base in all three plate appearances. Yost doubled home a run in the top of the third inning and followed that up with a run scoring single in the fourth.
Maddox Shoul and Jay Swanson both reached base three times and scored all three times.
Auburn managed just one hit, but much of that was due to the Auburn Mountainview defense. The Lions turned a smooth double play in the first inning and Jeremiah Weatherford made an incredible catch on a Johnathan Schumaier drive to center field.
“We made a lot of really good plays. For the defense to do that, it was amazing and showed what we need to do moving forward,” Brown said.
Auburn Mountainview sits in third place in the 3A NPSL and with six games remaining take on the two teams in front of them. The Lions take on Decatur, Kentlake and finish their season with Thomas Jefferson. The win against Auburn serves as the expectation of what the Lions will face against these tougher teams. “It’s gonna take what we were doing there (against Auburn). We just had a lot more energy than what we had bouncing back from being swept by White River. That is the kind of energy we are going to need. I feel like our team lit a fire,” Brown said.
