The Auburn Police Department is hosting a gun lockbox giveaway for National Gun Violence Awareness Day.

According to the Auburn Police Department, from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. June 5 at Auburn City Hall, 25 W. Main St., Auburn, the department will hold a handgun lockbox giveaway while supplies last, in partnership with the Regional Office of Gun Violence Prevention and the Alliance for Gun Responsibility. Brief remarks will be given at the start of the event.

According to APD spokesperson Kolby Crossley, the department wanted to participate in this event to help promote responsible firearm ownership and provide community members with resources to safely secure their firearms.

“Events like this give us an opportunity to connect with the community, educate on safe storage practices, and work together to help prevent firearm-related accidents, thefts and tragedies,” Crossley said.

Crossley said that lockboxes and other secure storage devices can play an important role in preventing future crimes and accidents. Crossley said that properly secured firearms are less likely to be stolen and used in crimes, accessed by children, or obtained by individuals who should not have access to them.

Additionally, unsecured firearms can create risks, such as a gun being used during moments of crisis or conflict, Crossley said, and that properly securing firearms helps protect families, prevents unauthorized access, and promotes safer communities overall.
