‘Honk! The Musical’ comes to Auburn Mountainview High School

From Page to Stage Productions is bringing the musical adaptation of the tale of “The Ugly Duckling” to Auburn Mountainview High School’s mainstage.

“Honk!,” the 2000 Olivier Award winner for Best Musical, is a popular show with over 8,000 productions having been performed worldwide. The show features music by George Stiles and book and lyrics written by Anthony Drewe.

From Page to Stage Productions is now bringing this beloved musical to Auburn. The show opened Aug. 1-2, but has four performances left Aug. 7-9. Auburn Mountainview High School is at 28900 124th Ave. SE.

From Page to Stage Productions is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that serves the South King County community. The organization was founded by Cheri Ayres-Graves and Camille Long in 2013.

Ayres-Graves is directing this production and Long is running the choreography along with Adriana Durren.

The nonprofit’s mission outlines that the organization aims to make theater education and performance accessible to all people, they explained on their website.

“From Page to Stage Productions is an incredibly special organization, but even more than that, it has become a close-knit community where people feel welcomed, supported, and valued,” said a spokesperson from the organization.

The nonprofit has opportunities for individuals of all ages and backgrounds.

“Our programs include opportunities for homeschooled students, our Arts for All program for adults with intellectual disabilities, and the community musicals we present each summer,” Ayres-Graves said.

Ayres-Graves also commented on the importance of supporting community theater.

“Coming to “Honk! The Musical” is an opportunity to enjoy a funny, heartwarming, family-friendly show while supporting local community theater,” she said. “Live theater brings people together to share a story, laugh, applaud, and celebrate the hard work of the performers and crew.”

The show tells the story of an odd-looking duck, played by Jesse Shaw, who honks instead of quacking. Immediately outcast by his fellow flock, he sets off on a journey of self-discovery. Major themes of the show surround self-acceptance, diversity and identity.

“We hope audiences leave feeling entertained, encouraged, and reminded that the qualities that make us different are often the very things that make our community wonderful,” said Ayres-Graves. “It is a creative, inspiring show that can be enjoyed by the entire family.”

Tickets begin at $15 and can either be purchased online at From Page to Stage Productions’ website or in-person at the performance.

“Our community productions are entirely volunteer-run, which helps us keep ticket prices affordable. We also offer a Pay What You Can performance during each community show so that families can experience live theater regardless of their budget,” Ayres-Graves said.

The show already had two performances on Aug. 1 and 2. There are four shows left of this production for the summer. Each show is two hours long.

The director is excited for the community to continue to show up and enjoy From Page to Stage Productions’ musical this summer.

“Our volunteer cast and crew have worked incredibly hard to bring it to the stage. Now we invite the community to become the final and essential part of the experience by joining us, laughing with us, applauding, and celebrating everything that makes each of us unique,” Ayres-Graves said.

“At a time when it can sometimes be difficult to know whether what we are seeing or hearing is real, live theater offers something genuinely human,” she said.
