City of Auburn Councilmember Bill Peloza was elected vice chair of the Metropolitan Solid Waste Management Advisory Committee (MSWMAC) for 2013.

Peloza’s election was announced on Feb. 8, following the election of leadership. Chris Eggen, deputy mayor of the City of Shoreline, was elected chair.

The MSWMAC functions under the authority of King County Ordinance No. 14971 as an advisory body to the County Council on solid waste system planning. The MSWMAC advises the County Council and the executive on matters related to solid waste management issues.

“It is a real pleasure for me to take a leadership role on this committee where I have been active for several years. I look forward in tackling local city issues and advocating policies that maintain low solid waste (garbage) rates for King County citizens,” Peloza said. “We must do this together through a robust recycling effort among the member cities. What we keep out of the Cedar Hills landfill by our recycling efforts will mean extending the landfill closure date from 2025 and beyond. This recycling effort will help manage a lower garbage rate for all of us.”

Peloza was elected to serve on the Auburn City Council beginning January 2004 and is serving his third term. He chairs the City’s Municipal Services Committee, is vice chair of the Public Works Committee and has served on the Finance Committee and LEOFF Board.

In addition to the MSWMAC, Peloza serves on several regional and national committees including: National League of Cities Energy, Environment and Natural Resources Steering Committee; King County Regional Water Quality Committee (RWQC); serves as the RWQC Caucus chair of the Suburban Cities Association; is a member of the King County Metropolitan Water Pollution Abatement Advisory Committee and King County Water Resource Inventory Area (WRIA 9 – Green/Duwamish & Central Puget Sound Watershed) Management and Watershed Ecosystem Forum (co-chair) Committees; Peloza also serves as an alternate member to the King County Flood Control District Advisory Committee and is an alternate member to the South County Area Transportation Board (SCATBd).
