TENNIS: Auburn duo earns No. 3 seed into district tourne

The Trojan doubles team of Josh Jeter and Travis Hanley defeated Todd Beamer’s Sean O’Bryan and Chase Friedrich, 6-1, 6-1 at the SPSL North sub-district tourney to qualify for the West Central District tourney this spring.

Jeter and Hanley, who finished with 6-0 and 7-1 records as singles players this season, helped power Auburn to a seventh place team finish with 14 points.

ALSO: Jefferson tied for fourth place at the sub-districts with Kentwood, both with 23 points. The Raiders will move on Joseph Lee as the No. 7 singles seed and the doubles teams of Branden Muraki and Brandyn Gomez; and Makoa Rosa and Kainoa Rosa with the seventh and sixth seeds, respectively. … Auburn Riverside was tied for 12th in the team standings with Decatur at 6 points, but did not move on any athletes. … Auburn’s Phil Smetheram and Jefferson’s Andrew Buchan, along with Bob Armstrong of Kentridge, were selected as the SPSL North Coaches of the Year. … The West Central District tourney will be conducted in May at Sprinker Recreation Center in Lakewood. … The state 4A tourney will be conducted May 29-30 at the Tri-City Court Club in Kennewick.
