Auburn urges dog, cat owners to license pets by Oct. 1

Published 12:04 pm Monday, August 9, 2010

Beginning Oct. 1, King County will begin fining pet owners in the Regional Animal Services area, including Auburn, if pets are not licensed with the county. City officials are urging owners of dogs and cats within the Auburn city limits to license their pets before Oct. 1 to avoid the fine.

To make the process as convenient for owners as possible, canvassers from the City of Auburn soon will be performing door-to-door visits in different parts of the city to help license pets providing a license tag on the spot for new and renewed licenses. There will be no extra charge for this door-to-door licensing service through September 2010, but unlicensed animals after that time may be charged a fee if they are not licensed.

King County annual licensing fees are as follows:

• Cats or dogs that are under 6 months of age: $15

• Spayed or neutered animals: $30

• Non-spayed or non-neutered pets: $60

• Owners that are 65 years of age or older, spayed or neutered animal: $15

After Oct. 1, the fine for an unlicensed pet will be $125 for a spayed/neutered pet and up to $250 for an unaltered pet.

In King County, all dogs and cats, whether they are indoor pets or not, must be licensed each year. Auburn is a partner with King County’s new Regional Animal Services program. Besides helping your pet get home if it gets lost, the money raised from animal licensing provides regular updates when rabies vaccinations are due, funds animal cruelty investigations and provides resources to address complaints about vicious animals, and helps care for injured and lost animals and pet adoptions.
