Olympic’s Hogenson wins teacher award

Laura Hogenson, a seventh-grade math and science teacher at Olympic Middle School, won the outstanding educator award through Wal-Mart’s 13th annual Teacher of the Year program.

During a school-wide assembly, the Auburn Wal-Mart store manager presented Hogenson with a $1,000 educational grant from the Wal-Mart/Sam’s Club Foundation to benefit Olympic. She also received a $100 Wal-Mart gift card and a personalized certificate.

Hogenson was nominated by her students and the Olympic community at the Auburn stores.

Hogenson has an effective approach to teaching math to her students – that math is practical and necessary outside of school. Hogenson is grateful for the teachers who sparked her interest in math.

“I want to do the same and interest students in math-related careers,” Hogenson said.

Hogenson also teaches earth science, which focuses on natural disasters, weather, astronomy and more. Some of her favorite topics to cover are aviation and rockets.

The Auburn School District will

host a College Night for Seniors at the Auburn Performing Arts Center at 7 p.m. Monday. Counselors from the Auburn high schools will present key information pertaining to the college admissions process. Additionally, representatives from the housing and student programs offices from two local universities will discuss how students and their parents can make a successful and safe transition to the college environment. Informational materials will be available in the PAC Lobby before and during the event.
