Ruth Campbell passed away June 9, 2011 at the age of 101 after living in Pacific, WA for 96 years, before moving to a retirement home in 2008. She is the last of Oscar and Judith Nyberg’s 4 children. She was born in Seattle March 14, 1910 of Swedish immigrant parents. Her father, a carpenter by trade took the interurban from Seattle to Pacific and built them a home, moving in 1913. Her mother became ill and died in 1919 of the large flu epidemic when Ruth was just 8 years old. She met her husband, Owen Campbell through her brother Carl and married in 1932. They owned and operated Campbells Union Oil Service Station in Pacific for 30 years before retiring in 1973. They were married 54 years before Owen passed away at age 79. Ruth was known to many of the kids of Pacific as the candy lady, when penny brands were sold over the counter. She was many things to many people she touched in her lifetime. She said she had a good life because she enjoyed it and enjoyed the many people she met. Her love, care and concern will be deeply missed by her family and friends. Ruth taught Sunday School for many years at the Methodist Church in Pacific next door to their service station. After retirement she and her husband attended the St. Mathews Episcopal Church in Auburn. She is survived by her 2 children, Owen Jr. and Judy Porter, 5 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and nieces and nephews and their children. A celebration of her life will be held at the St Mathews Episcopal Church of Auburn, 123 L St NE, Auburn,WA on Friday, June 17, 2011 at 1:00pm. In lieu of flowers it is suggested that donations be made in her honor to either the St.Mathews Episcopal Church Auburn, WA. or to the Senior Center in Pacific.
