Andrew Nowland Harron
August 11, 1924 to October 24, 2015
Andy was born in Los Angeles California, son of Andrew John Harron and Adaline Scheler Harron. He was preceded in death by his parents and four siblings, Leroy, Pearl, Pat and Beatrice.
As a member of the “Great Generation,” he joined the Army-Air Force at age 18. While training as an Air Force Cadet in Meadville, PA, he met his future wife, Janet Marie Whipple. After being promoted to Sergeant, he was honorably discharged as a disabled Vet after three years of service. Andy and Janet then settled in the Los Angeles area where Andy used the G.I. Bill to get his business degree. Because of his love of people, Andy became an extraordinary salesman. He worked for the Tappan Appliance Company for 32 years, managed up to 17 states, and was consistently a top salesman in the company.
In 1959, Andy and Janet moved to Portland, OR with their two children, Linda and Tom. Their daughter, Laura was born there in 1960. In 1963, Andy moved his family to Bellevue, Washington. As a highly skilled and passionate fisherman, he discovered Alaska where he came to love the beauty of the wilderness. He returned to Alaska every summer for 50 years to fish for salmon primarily in Yakutat, where he developed close friendships with the local residents there. He was thankful to have made his final trip to this beloved place with Laura and her husband Stephen this last August. Andy and Janet have been living in Auburn for the last eight years and have treasured the friendships they have made here.
Andy shared love, great stories, and humor with all he met. He leaves a legacy of integrity, honesty, humor, and love for his friends and surviving family members: his wife Janet of almost 71 years, children Linda (Pete), Tom (Elli) and Laura (Stephen), five grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. Family was the most important thing in Andy’s life; he adored his grandchildren and great-grandchildren and he will be greatly missed by all of us!
Andy left this world for his next great adventure surrounded by loved ones. He lived a full and happy 91 years, spreading laughter and love wherever he went!
A service with military honors will be held followed by a celebration of life attended by family members.
In lieu of flowers, Andy’s family suggests donating to a cause close to his heart: preserving Pacific Northwest salmon habitat for present and future generations. You can contact Save Our Wild Salmon Coalition at www.wildsalmon.org or call them at 206-300-1003.
