Auburn man charged in Seattle freeway shooting

Defendant has a lengthy criminal record, including 10 convictions and 15 pending charges.

An Auburn man is accused of getting into a fight at a bar, pointing a gun at a crowd before getting on the highway, then shooting at a car he cut off on Interstate 5 in Seattle.

On Oct. 14, 2025, the King County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office charged Zachary J. Jackson, 29, with second-degree assault and first-degree unlawful possession of a firearm. These charges stem from the alleged Sept. 3 incident on Interstate 5 near the Convention Center in Seattle, where Jackson is accused of shooting at another vehicle containing two people after Jackson cut the vehicle off.

According to the King County Adult and Juvenile Detention Center jail lookup portal, Jackson was booked into the King County Correctional Facility on Oct. 9 and is held on a $540,000 bail. According to court documents, Jackson entered a plea of not guilty and his motion for release on personal recognizance was denied by the court. Documents state that Jackson has 15 prior convictions and 10 pending charges.

Details of the alleged incident

At about 11:54 p.m. Sept. 3, Washington State Patrol received a 911 call about a drive-by shooting that occurred southbound on I-5 near the Convention Center in Seattle. The alleged victim told officers that his vehicle, a 2024 Kia EV9, had multiple bullet defects to its hood, front bumper, passenger side fender, passenger side headlight, windshield and roof.

Documents state that the alleged victim said he was getting ready to merge onto southbound I-5 from Howell Street when a silver car, later identified as a Honda Accord registered to Jackson, cut him off. According to documents, the alleged victim said that the driver of the car then fired several rounds at him from a handgun. The alleged victim and another passenger were not injured by the shooting.

Documents state that the alleged victim had a dashcam in his car, and he gave the memory card from the dashcam to officers. Officers reviewed the dashcam footage and saw a car that was registered to Jackson shoot at the Kia.

According to documents, officers discovered that before the shooting, Jackson was involved in a fight at the Hula Hula bar, 1501 East Olive Way. Documents state that a security guard did not allow Jackson to enter the bar, and Jackson then got into a fight with another patron in the parking lot of the bar.

Documents state that video footage from the bar showed Jackson get into a fight with a man, knock him down, and then punch the man’s head repeatedly. Witnesses said that Jackson then pulled a gun out and pointed it at the crowd and said he was from a hood in Yakima. Documents state that Jackson’s vehicle is registered to a home in Yakima, but his last known Department of Licensing address is in Auburn.

Documents state that cellphone data placed Jackson at the Hula Hula bar and subsequently in the area of the shooting when it occurred. Additionally, Jackson was arrested in Auburn on Sept. 6 for possession of brass knuckles. Documents state that after the arrest, inside Jackson’s car, officers found a Glock with a switch — a device that makes a Glock pistol fully automatic — and bullets that matched the kind of casings found at the scene of the shooting.

Documents state that when the Washington State Patrol found out that Jackson was booked into SCORE jail by Auburn police on Oct. 9, they contacted him, but he refused to speak without an attorney. He was subsequently charged.
