State baseball at a glance

• WHEN: Regionals are today. Semifinals are Friday and Saturday, May 23 and 24, at Safeco Field.

Kyle Buchanan and the rest of the Auburn High baseball team have caught a late-season surge of momentum and now are seeking their third straight trip to the state tournament semifinals. The Trojans begin Class 3A state play today in the regionals at Wheeler Field in Centralia when they take on Blanchet of the Seattle-based Metro League at 1 p.m. Kelso and Olympic square off in the 10 a.m. game at Wheeler. The two winners will meet at 4 p.m. for a trip to Safeco Field for next weekend’s state semifinals and trophy round. The Trojans are hoping to get back and earn a shot at reversing their fortunes from the past two years when the qualified for the championship game – at the Class 4A level in 2006 and at the 3A level last year – before coming up short.
