Voters choose Sea Axe for a night out

Best of Auburn 2025 winner.

What’s a better feeling than bringing out one’s inner lumberjack or Viking? For those seeking those raptures, seek ye no further than SEA AXE Axe Throwing, the Best Entertainment for a Night Out, as voted by the people of Auburn.

Open for almost four years, this is not Sea Axe’s first win as part of the Best of Auburn contest, having previously won in the best Night Out category and Family Entertainment. “It feels amazing, I would say it feels axe-ceptional,” said owner Vance Olsen of the wins his business has stacked up.

Olsen said he was inspired to open Sea Axe after going to another axe throwing establishment while on a date. “I loved it so much that on the car ride home, I told her, ‘Hey, I’m gonna open one of those.’ And she did not believe me at all. So I had to prove to her that wasn’t just all talk,” he said.

Axe throwing is just what the title entails: patrons learn how to properly throw axes (and knives) at a log-lined wall within a secure galley lane, with safety wiring and a set distance to help keep accidents to a minimum.

“It’s a great way to blow off steam and relieve stress,” said Olsen. “We’ve all been bowling and done kind of the more routine stuff, but this one steps it up and make it a lot more fun. It’s also more memorable. You’re not going to forget your first time throwing an axe.”

The walls are adorned with axe and Viking props, from Thor’s Mjölnir and Stormbreaker to a Minecraft axe, along with a shield, horned helmets and a Viking horn.

Sea Axe not only allows patrons to throw these cool weapons, but there are also games that can be played thanks to projections on the back wall, which include games like Connect Four, Tic-Tac-Toe and Fruit Ninja, which Olsen said is immensely popular. Though no feature is more popular than uploading a photo of someone the patron may not like so they can throw sharp axes and knives at them. The establishment also has various other arcade games for younger guests, like air hockey. Sea Axe even provides beverages and allows guests to bring in their own food, making Sea Axe a popular spot for birthday parties and work events.

Open Wednesday to Thursday from 2 to 10 p.m., Friday from 2 to 11 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. and Sunday from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sea Axe is closed Mondays and Tuesdays, except for appointments for groups have 12 or more people.
