All-School Food Drive collects big numbers

Auburn's All-School Food Drive exceeded the 90,000-point total for a second consecutive year.

Auburn’s All-School Food Drive exceeded the 90,000-point total for a second consecutive year.

Last month, Auburn School District’s 13th drive pulled in 57,941 pounds of food and $36,015 in cash donations from a total of 15,505 elementary, middle and high school students.

Combining the poundage and cash brought in, the 93,956-point total fell a little short of last year’s total. In 2015, ASD produced a record 96,621 points, which shattered the previous year’s total by almost 11,000.

Within each school level – elementary, middle and high school – schools compete to collect the most weight in food and dollars. Donations benefit the Auburn Food Bank.

Auburn High School, Olympic Middle School, and Lakeland Hills Elementary School were category winners based on a pounds-per-student average.

All told, each Auburn student brought in an average of 6.06 pounds of food. Food Bank executive director Debbie Christian noted that Lakeland Hills’ $9,052.26 was a record cash donation by an elementary school.
